More strange behaviour from V8 starting from the dock

When V8 has been started on the mac and then the window closed by clicking the red button top left, the icon still has the dot under it on the dock, if you click on the icon to open a new window nothing happens, you can right click and open recent files but there seems to be no way to open a new window unless you right click and quit first then restart, with version 6 it will open a new window.

I’m having trouble reproducing this here. Here is what I’m trying:

  1. Launch Rhino 8 for Mac (8.2 on macOS Sonoma) used here.
  2. Wait for the Splash screen to appear.
  3. Press the New Model button to start a new modeling window.
  4. Click the little red x in the upper left-hand corner of the window to close the Untitled document.
  5. In the macOS Dock, click the (running) Rhino 8 app icon.

Expected Behavior: The Splash Screen appears again and Rhino is key and active (you can also tell because the Rhino 8 menu bar should appear at the top. I can select a drop-down item for a new file or press Command+N to start a new modeling window.

Actual Behavior: Same as expected.

It sounds to me like, for you, after step 5, nothing appears at all.

Correct, the only difference is I am running Monterey.

Well I’m amazed, I was explaining to my wife this morning about the problem and demonstrated it to her and it worked perfectly, I don’t know if it was a glitch because I alternate between V6 and V8 or what but now I cannot replicate it either, what can I say, watch this space?

This happens to me so often. I go to demonstrate it to someone else and I can’t. Keep an eye out, if you notice a pattern, please let us know.

Well guess what, it did it again and I have a video of it, yay! How can you view it?

If the video is small enough, you should be able to attach it to a reply here. If not, please use Rhino - Upload to Support and set the recipient address to dan@mcneel.com

Where is your macOS Application Menu? It doesn’t look like you’re in Fullscreen mode here (I can see your Desktop).

It should be at the top of your screen. If you activate Safari or even Finder, where is it? It’s weird it’s not there…

In your video, right after you click the open Rhino 8 app icon in your dock, press the Control+up-arrow-key to activate Mission Control. Can you find the Rhino 8 Splash Screen on any of your Spaces? I’m a big fan of Spaces and I typically have 4:

I wonder if you have…

System Settings > Control Center > Automatically hide and show menu bar set to Always …?

The OS application menu is at the top of the screen, I use a 43" monitor so rarely open an app full screen, have you tried opening grasshopper and rhino on a single screen?
I think I did point out earlier that I am using Monterey so don’t have the same settings as you regarding Control+up-arrow-key That has no effect, I opened mission control from the app in applications, (I never use it, should I?) and not sure what was meant to happen?

Yep, frequently.

Right! I did attempt to reproduce this on a Mac with a single screen running macOS Monterey…and I could not.

I can’t see your menu bar in the video, but I presume, after you click the Rhino 8 application in the Dock, you can move your mouse to the top of the screen and Rhino 8 will be “key and active.” Since you can open files from the recents menu, I presume that’s true.

Correct, everything works fine except that bug where I have to quit the application on the dock after closing the current project if I want the normal start up splash screen.

I wish I had a clue why this is happening. The only situations I’ve seen before of something similar is when the Rhino application is started in one macOS “Space” (or on a different Display) and then the model window is moved to a different space. When clicking on the app icon, the Splash Screen “reappears” but not in the same space.

Yes very odd, it’s not a major problem, right now I am happy that all the plugins that weren’t available on OS when I first started this project 2 years ago are all available now.
