Modelling ruins

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to using Rhino and would really appreciate any advice, tutorials, or workflow tips for modelling historic ruins. I am currently trying to model King Charles Castle in the Isles of Scilly. I have drawn the plan, but I am struggling to move beyond simple extruded blocks and achieve a model that reflects the irregular, eroded nature of the ruins.

Does anyone have recommendations for Rhino techniques, commands, or reference workflows that are useful for modelling ruins or historic stone structures in a more realistic and architectural way?

Is the task you’re trying to accomplish for rendering, 3D printing, or another purpose? If it is rendering, it could well be that polygon modelling plus displacement mapping gets you there fastest, because you’re dealing with countless irregularities if you aim to achieve a good level of realism.

Example from a Blender marketplace.

yes i essentially want to create a 3d model for rendering. Ahh okay so should i just model in block form first and then when rendering i can acheve something more like ruins

Hi @Viya

Yes, but you’ll need good textures, search for free pbr stone/brick textures. that will get you 75% of the way there, make sure you download with displacement. You might need to cut up your model and do custom mapping. The top parts judging from your image might be different solids and not part of the plan extrusion, then when adding displacement to them you can get a more rounded and different weathering effect, maybe even 1/2 spheres that are edited and placed on the top surfaces.
