Some of the developments to Rhino for mac have been great, but the new materials selector doesn’t match up, I’m afraid. Sorry to grumble.
Bugs first;
Objects lose their maps frequently (turn black)
Rhino crashes frequently using the new popup materials selector
Applying maps is extremely slow (spinning ball before new popup window appears)
In rendered mode, the material tab does not appear if any curves or dimensions are included in the selection
In shaded mode, you cannot turn off ‘show isocurves’ if any any curves or dimensions are included in the selection
The ‘match’ materials selection does not work for environment maps (this has never worked in rhino for mac- it does in the windows version, however)
In the materials selection, I can’t choose ‘‘edit’’ if objects with different materials are selected simultaneously.
Analyze tools like Zebra or Environment Map don’t work.
The ‘default’ material suddenly becomes overexposed with hatched lines for shadows (please see attached image below).
Complaints;
The Rhino maps really don’t look good (compared with auxpecker maps, for example- I’m applying these manually at the moment as the plugin is not integrated in rhino for mac. Every rhino using product designer I know does the same)
Maybe there’s something wrong my my hardware or settings? If so please let me know.
Rhino ‘anodized alu material’ (sometimes)
The same Rhino ‘anodized alu material’ (other times)
Auxpecker anodized material
Auxpecker gold material
Hope the feedback is useful.
Anthony

I’m having the same problems. I also have not founded a way to add new materials to the library, also once a material is used in a model it becomes unnamed in the model material column.
Thanks for the reply. I have downloaded some woodgrain file and I can not get them to load in to the library. Two are of Food For Rhino The rest are .png or .jpg files with Toucan you could drag and drop a .png file to make a new material but does not work for me how. I’m a newbie to Rhino for Mac I am coming of the World of Sketch-up and trying to learn now to use Rhino.
I usually upload onto the ‘environment’ section of the material. (make sure everything else is set to zero though). Good luck with Rhino there are some great tutorials out there. Enjoy
Hi Tony - if you edit the material > Texture > Map file > Choose… you should then be able to assign an image file as a texture- is that what you meant?
No need to apologize…grumbling is what we thrive on

Hrmmm. I think I’ve seen this as well. I’m not sure what is going on here. I can’t seem to replicate this consistently. Can you?

I just want to make sure I know which one you are talking about…are you talking about the window that you get when you try the MaterialEditor command? Or…?
In rendered mode, the material tab does not appear if any curves or dimensions are included in the selection
Hrmmm. Well, you can’t really apply a material to a curve or dimension, but I see what you mean…
The ‘match’ materials selection does not work for environment maps (this has never worked in rhino for mac- it does in the windows version, however)
Yes, I cannot replicate the objects losing their maps either. It seems pretty random.
With the crashes- it is indeed the window when you get when you try the Material editor. I’ve only had these crashes with really big files. I’ve been working on smaller files the past day or so and haven’t had a problem.
Re- ‘‘In the materials selection, I can’t choose ‘‘edit’’ if objects with different materials are selected simultaneously’’- I see what you mean by this- I suppose it’s just a different way of working I need to adapt to.
For the moment, that’s the way it’s intended to work…multi-material editing is something we’d like to get working, but it’s not a high-priority right now.
Problem I am having is that I can not figure out how to change the material of a part. I have dozens of untitled materials - all the same thing basically - one for each part that I assigned the color to. Prior to the recent update that obsoleted toucan, I just used the Materials tab and assigned a color using the color wheel. Can’t seem to do that anymore. Now I’d like to use the same material for all the same colored parts, but it won’t let me change from the untitled material. Nor can I condense all the ‘untitled’-but-same materials into one material.
well, it works but unless I apply my custom material to EVERY part that uses it at once (not practical to do), I still end up with several versions of the material in the model materials window. Plus I don’t see how I can alter the custom material. What I’d like to do is create a pallet of custom materials - apply them to the specific parts, and then be able to edit that material later and have it applied to all the parts that use it.
I think I see what you mean and will file this bug now. If I drag and drop a model material to a group of objects and then edit the material, it only updates one of the objects.
If you right click a custom material you can edit it by choosing ‘edit library material’. This won’t change the Standard materials.
I’m seeing a few other issues in the material editor too and will start fileing them. If you find specific things you think are bugs, please report them one at a time with screenshots and/or files to help explain the steps you take to see them.
When I right click on the material it does nothing. So I tried left clicking with modifier keys and for the most part nothing… except for one moment when the ‘edit library material’ menu came up, but I wasn’t sure what I pressed (I thought it as CTRL/OPT), but I have been unable to repeat it.
That’s odd, can you tell us what Mac hardware and OSX you’re using as well as if you use any additional input devices like a tablet or 3D mouse? Also, what version of Mac Rhino are you using?
My right click was set to something different. I set the wheel button to right click and now it is working. Still, though, I should be able to activate a right click with a left click and modifier key, no?
Can you try another mouse as a test? I’ve had many issues with Logitech devices over the years mostly due to their drivers. That may be a factor here. Also double check in the control software for the device that RMB is still the button you think it is.
