Materials interface - why two places to view and edit materials?

It’s a small thing but I’m wondering why there are two places to view and edit materials in Rhino 7?

My understanding is that the Materials tab (#1 in my screenshot above) can be regarded as a ‘materials library’ where one can view and edit all the materials and textures in a project. Meanwhile the Material tab nested under Properties (#2 in my screenshot) is more like a ‘material editor’ for specific instances of a material/texture. But it’s possible to load and edit the properties of materials in both places

I readily admit that I’m no expert with materials and texturing functionality in Rhino. Perhaps because of this I sometimes find myself needing to check both places to find out where a certain material/texture has been applied.

Can anyone help me understand why the materials and textures side of Rhino is set up like this?

Would it be useful to distinguish between ‘Materials’ and ‘Material’ tabs with slightly different icons…?

Is it in any way feasible to streamline the materials and textures functionality so that only one tab would be needed…?

The usual caveat that I’m still working in R7 and this may have been updated in R8.
