I’ve been experiencing this issue as well since the previous Rhino version.

I don’t see that here. pls run _SystemInfo and post back the results

@Gijs My problem is probably the drivers. I’m using Windows 10, and Windows will no longer update drivers starting from October 2025.

The issue wasn’t present 1-3 WIPs ago.
I can’t imagine it’s because of the drivers.

材质面板中的缩略图为黑色。
(9.0.2611.12305,2026-04-21) Mine is the same situation

@Charles @brvdln @764099883
could you run OptionsExport in Rhino WIP and send the resulting .rhs (in a pm)?
Thanks

Okay, things are getting even stranger. Now, if I try to apply a material to an object, the viewport screen turns black.

Hi @brvdln,
Your drivers are a little old (2025), there are new. Your card is a not a RTX, but the earlier GTX.
Bet the lastest drivers from nvidia, of course.

Also why you are troubleshoot, disable your 3rd party plugins:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\McNeel\Rhinoceros\7.0\Plug-ins\XNurbs (80be33b0-13b2-4ac4-9c77-03829214f9e9)\6.1.1.119\XNurbsRhino7.rhp “XNurbs”

There are two Rhino test commands that may fix the issue of thumbnails displaying black instead of the material preview in the Materials panel. TestRestoreLibraryFileAssociations and TestClearRDKCaches.
Give these a try and let us know if they help.

Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier

@mary Ok, I’ll check it on Monday when I’m back in the office, thanks.

Apparently it is fixed in (9.0.26114.6305, 2026-04-24).

@mary
I completely deleted the Rhino 7 folder. I also tried both commands, “TestRestoreLibraryFileAssociations” and “TestClearRDKCaches”. I launched Rhino 8 and Rhino 9: in Rhino 8 everything seems fine, but in Rhino 9 the issue persists — the screen still appears on every material.
I’ve already updated the Nvidia drivers. As for Windows, I’m no longer receiving any updates of any kind.

The problem with the multilingual package, try another language, it might be safe then

@brvdln
Do the materials appear and then disappear?
Which renderer do you current?
Please send a screen capture.

Thanks,
Mary Ann Fugier

@mary A short video while I add materials (black background) in Rhino’s standard rendered view. However, I think it’s an issue with this office PC—on my home PC, Rhino displays the icons correctly. I suspect the inability to update Windows drivers is causing these problems.

@mary With version 9.0.26118.12305 (2026-04-28) of Rhino, the problem has disappeared and the materials are now working again.

Correction, the icon issue is gone, but when I try to assign a material by dragging it onto an object, the viewport turns dark. In some cases, as shown in the video, Rhino freezes and then crashes.

Hi Brv -

Could you post your latest SystemInfo?
Also, does this also crash when you switch to OpenGL mode instead of Direct3D?
