The previews of the material are very noisy. I don’t think that was always the case. But I can’t find the settings for it. What do I have to do?
Advanced settings PreviewSamples. What value do you have now? Try and make it bigger.
Also make sure your gamma is set to 2.2 and enabled for linear workflow.
If you are not happy with the quality of the preview still you can increase the amount of samples. As @maxsoder mentioned: Tools > Options > Advanced, type RhinoCycles.PreviewCycles
and increase the sample count from its default 150 to something larger. Try 250, or 500, or even 1000. Note that it’ll make the preview rendering heavier.
I didn’t understand @maxsoder’s answer and was looking in the wrong places. Now I have tried it, unfortunately nothing changes in the preview. I also think that the preview used to be better without me ever changing anything there.
By the way, Rhino does not find anything under RhinoCycles.PreviewCycles
. This probably refers to the PreviewSamples mentioned above
The picture shows the setting 1000Samples. With this number of samples it should be much better, shouldn’t it? I am at a loss…

My bad, I indeed typoed and meant to write RhinoCycles.PreviewSamples
.
After you have made changes to that setting you should tumble the thumbnail. Click and hold right mouse button and tumble that thumbnail model a bit. Let it render and then check the results.
Still looks like you’re on low gamma settings, you should keep it on and at 2.2.
Thanks for reminding me about the gamma settings. It was only set to 1.
Unfortunately the result is not good. With 1000samples the picture should be much better?
I’m not sure at what resolution this is rendering, @maxsoder is there a maximum resolution that thumbnails are rendered at, then scaled up?
Anyway, I wouldn’t worry too much about the previews. They are previews, not the final product. If the materials render well in Raytraced and Rhino Render then it all should still be good.
I myself typically set PreviewSamples to 10.
Here 10 samples in the materials panel
I’m not worried, I’d like it to be better. Rendering the whole scenes to see it is a bad option. And if you’re satisfied, that doesn’t really help me…
.
How does the current quality prevent you from reaching your goals?
edit: or ask differently, how would improved material preview help you?
I will log a bug. I might have found a problem. So the floating editor checks for the screen scale, but there is a bug in a few sizes. What does the TestSystemScreenInfo command output? Can you copy/past the information here.

@Dietrich_Frank I would like to have the information that the TestSystemScreenInfo command outputs. This will give me more information about the displays you have and how they are setup.
Sorry. Is it correct now?
