I’ve got the exact same issue, except I’m at 12 unread.
I muted some categories, maybe that could have something to do with it?

Well, it’s perhaps a bit early to cry “Victory !”, but it seems that since last evening I have no more spurious “New” posts being indicated. If that’s a definite fix, then woo hoo !! Thanks for getting that done, it was pretty annoying.
