Mapping equirectangular image to sphere?

See the image below, with was shot with a Ricoh Theta. Projection is is in equirectangular. Can I map the image as texture to a sphere so that projection resembles the original panorama?

I know that I can use equirectangular images for environments, but here I want to map them to objects.

To answer my own question: AFAICS a simple bitmap decal with UV mapping and default parameters does the trick.
