Making a solid from cage/net made of curves

Hiya! still getting used to rhino 8, so maybe a simple question!

I have made a cage/ net of a shape with curves that i would like to be a solid. not sure how to make it a complete solid however.

I’ve tried extruding and sweeping rails but none have worked. Any help appreciated!!!

Your collection of curves is pretty random, if you Explode them you have a better starting point, but this “make a cage of curves and somehow magically make it a solid” thing just isn’t proper NURBS modeling workflow. Please just see the Level 1 and 2 Rhino training.

Hi @William11
First thing to do, is to make sure that your end points meet up, that curves are symmetrical (where needed). The curves here are 0.014mm off-axis and end points don’t meet up. Use Osnap, SmartTrack and all the other modeling aids to make sure your ground work is precise. It’s “garbage in, garbage out” when NURBS modeling.

From this collection of curves, I’m not quite sure exactly what surfaces you are looking for, as there are some internal lines as well, but if it’s “just” the outer surfaces, I’d use mainly Loft - see attached file, where I’ve deleted (what I believe to be) the superfluous curves.

asking question at this stage is indeed a bit unfair for those trying to get real stuff answered, the discourse is not a place for beginners, but alright it has happened before, and it will keep happening.

explode the lines delete the triangular ones join the lines into 3 separate here marked 1,2,3 select all 3 and call the command Loft with option straight sections and closed loft.

Thank you so much for your help, this worked perfectly.

Sorry! I didn’t know beginners weren’t superposed to be asking for help.
I had tried on my own as best i could and looked for answers elsewhere but didn’t have much luck. Is there somewhere else you would suggest going to when I’m stuck on stuff?

the ~£320 courses? on top of the £195 software?

You can access them through the Help file.

This is the place to ask questions, encephalon is just a bit exasperated when some noobs ask question after question with no apparent effort made to actually learn anything. I mean you can try Reddit if you want answers so bad they seem like deliberate trolling.

Going through the Level 1 and 2 training–by yourself or with a paid course, sure why not? This isn’t a toy–is highly recommended, even if you’ve used something else before.

I don’t agree at all.
If you don’t feel like helping beginners/noobs/youngsters/ignorami/people who have yet to understand the finer details of single span modeling, that’s fine! But don’t tell people to not ask questions. I whole-heartedly support the notion of “give it a shot before you ask” and RTFM, but telling beginners as a whole to NOT ask questions here on Discourse is not OK. You can tell them that YOU don’t want to help them, if it’s vital to your personal well-being, but don’t discourage them from asking for help from those who like to help. That’s not very Mr. Rogers, and we should all be more like Mr. Rogers.

no, i am not  but ok, i actually just wanted to emphasize that checking out some tutorials how to get started as you mentioned would be helpful for everybody.

you have stripped the entire context out of my lines and stuffed it into something entirely new.

no i did not tell anybody not to post anything when they are new, in fact i never ever ever in my entire live on discourse turned down even the dumbest of requests.

still in the recent years we are seeing more and more ridiculous questions, which the above is not one off even if it is very basic, and i do think that times change and old believes might have to be tuned a bit.

if you think that i am really what you pointed me out to be then please go back in my history and dig up any reply where i would show such an attitude… amazing. actually sad to read such bullshit.

i have no idea what that is

Well…

I’m sorry if I read this all wrong, but this is how it reads to me (and to OP, obviously, as he apologizes for asking):

  • Only those with “real stuff” gets answers. From the tone of your writing it’s easy to assume that “real” means advanced
  • Discourse is not for beginners.
If that’s not what you meant, I’m sorry for reading it the wrong way - but I think it’s fair to understand what you wrote that way, since you literally wrote “discourse is not a place for beginners”.

PS Peace out!

if you must get hung up on it you can read it as you wish of course.

maybe reread the entire reply once more in relation?

before you get all cool and perfect with others.
what a dumb ego debate as this point. and actually sad, i thought you were indeed a cool guy up until now.

also i am quite amazed that you are targeting me here with the one having serious attitude issues, but turn a blind eye to such comments?

you are clearly hooked up.

Hi @encephalon
I didn’t mean to target you at all, and I’m sorry if it came across that way - probably shouldn’t have quoted your post directly. I was trying to convey to the OP - and other beginners who may come across this thread - the notion that it’s quite OK to ask questions; even the dumb ones.

I did, and as previously stated: I might have simply misunderstood your meaning. I still don’t understand what about my interpretation is wrong from your intended meaning, but I stand corrected. That’s why I wrote:

How I read it clearly isn’t what you meant. English isn’t my first (or even second) language, so sorry for not reading it right.

I still think you’re cool, and I know that you are very helpful around here, so I’ll just shut my trap.

Regards, Jakob

i understand and dont disagree, but looking around how selfish the people becoming on discourse recently, blatantly asking for ready solutions, not trying anything themselves rather let others think and solve and in many case not even return to say thank you, i believe it is equally important to point it out at least somehow i would say. and again i was only trying to emphasize something @JimCarruthers had pointed out already

i also tried to convey that as balanced as i could, but you unfortunately and by all means persistently stripped out only the bitter from my words. making an example out of me much rather than actually understanding what i meant.

internet is such vague place to be.

yes quite right, ideally you would not, but that will not hold anybody back still doing it, and still will get help. just a bit of a thought how much effort we should be asking from others is never wrong.

This is not targeted at you but a reminder to us all as a community.

To be crystal clear EVERYONE is welcome here. Beginners, pros, and everyone in between. We do not gatekeep nor will we ever, nor will we tolerate folks who do. Our forum is one of the last bastions of civility on the internet and we pride ourselves on making this a welcoming place to new folks.

Do not forget… we were ALL beginners once and we ALL got help here in one form or another.

Be nice, be helpful, or be silent and move on.

If you want to pile on and bash new folks, go the the zbrush forum…

specifically; @William11 you are welcome to ask any question here anytime. We are happy to point you to a lot of learning resources as well, but come back anytime and ask away.

and thus do you target me once more pulling my words out of context

yet do you single me out once more

i am all for understanding, not for bashing. i have the feeling my intentions are still completely misunderstood.

nope.
your comments simply provided an opportunity to remind us all to treat each other well.

If you feel targeted, I assure you it’s not by intent. Don’t look for a fight I’m not trying to start.

We all need a reminder now and then to keep this place civil and welcoming, myself included.

you are wasting logs on a fire that was completed ceased. quote my words pulling them out of context. you might not be seeing your own actions, but they are absolutely not necessary and have nothing to do with being civil, you might see that different, different country different mentality, its ok i am not a fan of it, but we all can grow a bit further i hope.

also

i strongly believe the entire topic was a good reminder.
