M1 mac- file won't open after save - workaround

As you know the m1 mac is NOT supported hardware YET.

But…many of you have ignored this and have installed Rhino on m1 macs anyways.

THIS IS ONLY FOR M1 MAC USERS.

Many of you are seeing Rhino may run on your Mac, and you save your file but then you cannot reopen it. Or someone sent you a file made elsewhere and it won’t open. (this is one of the many reasons M1 Macs are not supported yet)

A workaround for now is to make a new blank file and file>import your model. that should allow you to see your data again.

BUT… if you save the model in any mode except wireframe you are very likely to see this fail to open problem occur again.

for now, make sure you switch to wireframe mode BEFORE saving your model.

We are working diligently to include m1 macs as supported hardware, but we are NOT there yet.

hoping this new info helps alleviate some pain points until we can get a complete solution.

please let us know if this works for you, and if it works reliably.

are you testing on an m1 Kyle? did you try the metal test command?

no, none of the techs are using an M1 mac, although our devs have a few of them.

we have been fielding some tech reports from angry users who ignored the DON’T INSTALL RHINO ON M1 MACS YET posts all over the forum.

we have narrowed one particularly annoying crash down to the shaded modes which is what this post is addressing.
