I took a sphere and split the bottom of it. I manipulated the bottom of the sphere with cage edit to make a sneaker sole. I want a diamond grid on the bottom of the sole. When I plug in my surface to the diamond panel, the diamond panels go over the bottom of the sole. How would I get the diamond panel to only effect the surface I want. I tried using shrinktrimmedsurface and rebuilding the surface with networksurface and patch. I still get the same results.

that’s because your surface is trimmed (aka a brepface). Search the forum for lunbox on trimmed surface, the question is quite frequent.
