I recovered some lost files - but now rhino cannot open it - and ideas

try the rescue3dm command
and fwiw, never work from a cloud drive. Work and save locally, then back up to cloud at the end of your work session.
I have seen cases - though not recently - where files on a cloud drive were jumbled - that is, the extensions were all over the place - 3dm files with .png extensions and so on. I think I made a script at the time to look at all the files in a folder and assign ‘.3dm’ to the ones that are actually Rhino files. I do not recall how well that worked and I don’t have any idea if that is the case here, but it might be worth a try.
