I would like to have a better understanding of how lighting works in Rhino.
If I turn off the sun and the skylight and any HDR dome lighting while in render mode why is the scene
not pitch black? what light source is left to light the scene?

Hi Edwin - if Rhino does not find any lights it puts in a default one over the camera’s ‘left shoulder’
If you don’t want this, place a light with very low intensity and high falloff somewhere in the scene - you may even be able to set it to zero and it will trick Rhino into thinking there is a light.
