License Validation Improvememnts in 5A706

Hi Everyone,

Rhino for Mac WIP 5A706 was released yesterday. It has many improvements to the license validation process.

A few details:

  • The user interface is cleaner and more Appley (or is it Macish?)
  • Validation works over HTTPS by default, but can fall back to HTTP - this should allow validation from mainland China to work (I hope).
  • Validation contacts our validation servers in Seattle directly, rather than servers hosted by Google (this should also help with validation from mainland China).
  • Offline license validation should work (previously it displayed an ugly exception message)
  • Offline license validation is now called “Get a validation code manually”, and contrasts with the other option, “Get a validation code automatically”.
  • Switching between manual and automatic license validation should be more obvious
  • Error messages should be clearer and may help you figure out what you need to do on your own.
  • Timeouts for checking for our server are much shorter, so those of you behind firewalls or disconnected from the Internet shouldn’t need to wait as long to begin the “Get a validation code manually” process.

Please let me know if you see any problems or have any confusion with validation with build 5A706.

Note, those of you who already validated your licenses successfully won’t see the validation wizard. That’s by design, so don’t worry about it.
