Layers bug

Inventor: CAD Learn Fusion 360 - Slog Bog has a screen capture from my windows 11 laptop. I’m running WIP after running into problems on my MAC.

The Pipe Fittings are 3D Step files from McMaster Carr.

Somehow the two pictured inherit Purple from Layer 2, and don’t react as expected as Green items on the 45deg/F sublayer.

Hi Gary -

I’m only seeing a Rhino 8 evaluation connected to your eMail address…

Are you mentioning this because you need help with that?

Please always post a 3dm file when reporting bugs.
From what it sounds like so far, the STEP file has per-face colors assigned to objects, perhaps?

The object probably has color by object applied, not color by layer. Select the object and look in Properties to check/change. (or per-face color as Wim suggested)

Hi Wim,

Drag and dropped the file from my MAC where it’s working much better! The log above the program doesn’t show on my Mac and all the tutorials so far are using Windows, but Windows also gave me grief trying to select individual pieces.

Hi @Gary_Stout,

Your 45-degree fitting is a Block.

The objects that make up a block have their own properties, such as display color, that can effect how instances of the block appear when inserted.

For details, look for “Properties by parent” in the above link to the Rhino online help.

Using Rhino’s BlockEdit command, I’ve modified the block’s objects by setting their display color to “By Parent”. This way, the objects that make up a block will use the color of the layer on which the block instance resides.

Hi Gary -

Could you clarify what that means?

To Display Command History on a Mac hit F2 as per Kyle at Rhino Tech Support.

Actually it was FunctionKey+F2 on my SATHECHI keyboard.

Kyle in Tech Support
If Object properties/Type says “Block …” then select the object and explode it, then click Join to put it back together so Type says “closed solid poysurface”.

Presto, the layers thing is now working as expected!
