I would like to see the layer state (on/off) separate from which layer is active at the time.

Exactly this.
plus, there should be an option next to the lightbulb to select/deselect objects on that layer:

Select Objects on active Layer

For me this is something I need to do often. I think there should be a handy ‘select objects’ icon in the layers panel for each layer along with the light bulb/lock icons. This would avoid the long way around… right click>scroll down>left click to select!!! This, I think will benefit everyone. Are there plans to simplify this? (without scripts…)
