Layer visibility off in all layouts+details

hi,

is it possible to turn off a (newly created) layer in every layout and every detail?

“Layer off (on) in selected Detail only” doesn’t do the trick for me - every time i add a new layer to a project i find myself turning it off in all the layouts, it drives me crazy.

Thanks a lot!

Hi, @thorsten.

I believe what you are looking for is the method described in the attached image (below).

To my knowledge, there was a plan for a “Layer Off Everywhere” option, but that seems to be obsolete. For Reference: Rhino 8 WIP Feature: New Layer Visibility Control (Obsolete)

My reply will bump your question back up to the top of the list, so maybe we’ll get more responses. @mary may have a better handle on this.

Here’s the test file I used:
Layer Off Everywhere (All Layouts and New Detail Off).3dm (50.8 KB)

Hi Thorsten -

As Steve writes, that currently requires two steps.
First you need to turn the layer on in a selected detail only (it doesn’t have to be active) on all layouts. You then have to turn the layer off for that one remaining detail.

Some system for somehow locking the state of details until manually updated is a feature request that has been on the list for quite a while. I’ve added this thread.

i think no special system is required for this, simple toggle in layer panel on top to switch between “new layers on or off in existing details”. done

Hi All,
This is already possible in Rhino 8 to turn a layer off in all details on all layouts.

A more visible or easily discoverable way to do this is on the wish list.
(It will not happen for Rhino 8. Rhino 9 is a possibility when the developers discuss.)
But you can get there in Rhino 8, with a few easy clicks.

Here is more on what @stevefuchs describes above.
HOW TO: TURN Layer Off in ALL DETAILS on ALL LAYOUTS

  1. Make the Layer (set the new layer off if you want that for future details)

  2. Go to a layout and make a detail active. ← DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP
This can be a detail that you want the layer ON in or OFF.

  3. In the Layer panel, scroll the layer you just made.

  4. Go to the column of Details ON, and right-click on the light bulb icon in the layer row.

  5. Click ON and IN THIS DETAIL ONLY → ALL LAYOUTS.

  6. If you also want it OFF in this detail, then click the light blub in the layer row under Details ON to turn it off in the active detail.

See a video on how to do this here with @stevefuchs 3DM.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,

thanks i did not know about this

it doesnt work actually. trying to off new layers on existing details across all layouts this way and it does not work.

@Juan_Gallo

  • Make sure the layer you are turning off is not current.
  • Send a file
  • Send a screen capture video to show us what you are doing.
Maybe we can see what you are not doing and should be.
