Laptop's busted

A few days ago water fell on my laptop. It’s currently in a repair shop for inspection but chances are it’s unsalvagable. Obviously, this means I’ll need to install Rhino to a new laptop. The problem is that when I looked up how to move a license, the first step was to deactivate the license from the old laptop, and that’s obviously not an option in this case. What do I do? I bought the full version btw, and I don’t want to spend that money again if I can help it.

Contact sales@mcneel.com and they’ll most likely be able to help you out given your situation. It will help them to send if you send your license key along with your message.

If it’s at all suitable for you, I recommend you place your license in your Rhino account next time, as you will be able to run Rhino in any computer by logging in.

Thank you. Do I need some kind of verification to prove that the laptop’s broken? Also, thank you for the tip about the license key, I didn’t know that.

I’m not sure, contacting sales directly will be your best bet.

Thank you.

Update on the solution: old laptop not needed after all. When I entered the license key as I opened Rhino on the new laptop, it asked me if I was sure because that would remove the license from the old one. I confirmed and for now I can use it with no issues. I’ll get back to this thread if a problem comes up (say, Rhino tells me “your 40 days are up!” or something) but for now all good. Hope this helps someone with the same problem.

Also, please don’t make the same mistake as me and place your laptop anywhere near a glass of water. (even if the new laptop is MUCH cooler)

Sounds like your licence might have been in a Rhino account (Cloud Zoo).

Maybe? I just bought it online from McNeel, I have the receipt and everything.

Doesn’t matter where or how you bought it, it matters how you installed it. When you run the installer, it offers to let you create a Rhino account (recommended) for online license management or install the license fixed locally.

Can’t recall if I did so. At any case, this worked for me so I thought should share it.
