That’s interesting. I would have thought Rhino is only popular in Sweden in arkitektur or inredningsdesign.
That’s a rather good one I recommended on my “on a shoestring” list for new students.
Yes it also has upgradable ram capacity and another storage slot but this will do for now
this also replaces my existing setup from 2012 and gives me mobile power from:
Intel core i7 3930k
Rtx 2070 Nvidia
32gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram crucial ballistix
1.5tb HDD
500gb SSD Samsung
I mean solidworks is used in the field I’m at or any similar like solid edge etc..any manufacturing use
Rhino will be more of a complement if needed most likely freelance work
but that’s true for Sweden when I was starting out by the end of rhino 4 some architecture firms and private lesson packages where available at that time and people didn’t even know it existed
Now I can talk about it and people know about it or have used it themselves I have a game designer in my class they used it for some assets and file conversions for some racing game
If you look at the entirety of it rhinos tools are quite powerful
There is also a thread about its use out in the wild is quite an eye opener if we look outside our borders: Real life product design examples made in Rhino
Yeah, my impression from industrial/automotive/defence design in Sweden is SolidWorks, Fusion, NX, Creo. Very rarely Catia, Alias.
My vision is improving and I have the opportunity to test it now here are my thoughts so far if anyone is wanting to buy:
The plus+
-Looks good
-Performance is like an empty void it just devours anything I throw at it even my most demanding model at 7 gb runs smoothly in Rhino
-It’s upgradable to 64gb ram so in the future it’s possible to give it more ram juice by swapping out the sticks but for now 32gb is fine
-It has a built in GPU aswell as the rtx 5060 that seems to work together, whenever I start Rhino the 5060 gets activity
-16 inch screen is just perfect for me not to big and not to little great resolution everything is sharp and clear, 240hz, HDR, mat finish screen, colors are good it has everything I need and more really
-Since it’s a gaming laptop I ran some games it runs modern games without issues way better than my desktop
The minus-
-Battery life sucks as it requires a nuclear power plant sized battery to power this thing but it was to be expected at 4 hours max I can still model in rhino or sw comfortably from my bed a session. (there are certain things I can do to increase that but this is the default state of it I will test battery saving profiles soon)
-Windows 11 looks like ***** and it sucks but not windows 8 levels of atrocities (seriously I should have dual booted with Linux)
- fans spin up sometimes during gaming but it’s mostly quiet depending on the game. For demanding tasks like rendering I would consider a proper laptop cooler and the power plugged in as it feels like its going to suck the soul of air itself in the room and asphyxiate myself into a permanent coma. I am not going to render on this but measures should be taken.
Update 2:
Had this for nearly 1 year now it works fantastic for school work the different cad projects I’ve had, presentations and practice at companies it has so much power and speed to deliver it’s like a mobile desktop such a great companion.
Anyone wanting to get a legion i highly recommend so far very reliable machines.
Apparently, there might be a few reasons to hold off on an upgrade in the short/medium term: RAM prices might come down. GPU’s? It’s hard to say. Prices are very inflated right now. All this AI is nice but it’s jacking up hardware prices.
The value right now is absolutely not what it was when I bought my laptop (around two years ago now I think). If I wanted to buy something with the same specs it would basically cost virtually the same (maybe a better case / screen but not much in the way of speed). If I HAD TO buy something I would opt for second hand - buying something off someone who can’t wait to upgrade. And in this case it would be a desktop (second hand laptops can be a bit hairy). A well-researched purchase can end up being good value - at least relative to today’s market.
