Kressling Fold for Thesis

Hey everyone!

I am a design student in Chile currently working on my final thesis. My project aims to better the quality of life of patients with asthma by providing a new solution that directly deals with their main problems.

I am posting because I am in urgent need of assistance with a specific modeling task for my project: a Kresling fold tube (5cm=width, 15cm=length). I am currently at a critical stage of my thesis and would greatly appreciate any help in modeling this.

I need the cillinder to be able to fold in on itself. The purpose of this is to 3D print it in TPU to actually fold in real life. It has to be 15cm=L, 5cm=W (Deployed), and the corners must have a little dent to help it fold, like in the following image:

I would greatly appreciate any and all help in creating this. If its necessary, I would love to discuss rates and process to get this done.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

so you made already a model that you need to fold , like in your image ?

Hey! Thanks for the reply,

I made a model just using Rhino, but I couldn’t make it look exactly like the first image. (the second image where I point the dents on the corners is from another model that I didn’t make).

Ok, i tried it and thought that all edges keep there lenght but thats not the case.

All triangles rotate around there bottom axes and there is only one optimum with minimum edge deformation ( stretching ) between height , edge count and shifted angle between bottom top.

To model this thing is not so difficult but i guess you will not get the behaviour in motion that you might expect.

What is the shift angle between bottom top hexagon that you want?
