Joining Problem

two objects with a common boundary will not join, why?? the second object selected blinks; NOT a very helpful or insightful error message!

if this was the issue if you zoom really close you will see its not exactly on the edges

a split fixes it

thanks for the quick reply!! I’m confused; how can the cut edge differ from the cutting edge?? I’ve went to great trouble to always attempt to join two free edges with a single profile… given there’s some how that enables the cut edge to differ from the cutting edge, what’s the process to “fix” the mismatch? ie: what’s selected and which command(s) are used. is there a way to quantify the residual mismatch?

What did you cut with what?

If you cut the planar surface with the rounded object, and the round object protruded through the planar surface, then the rounded object will protrude past the cut edge.

the planar surface was “split” with the bottom of the horn, two planar free edges. what tolerance are the “split” and “join” functions working to? given the unrecognized sensitivity, is there an orthogonal alignment function to establish a common working plane? thanks!

@artesmith The horn protrudes 0.0021 to 0.0026 beyond the planar surface. The objects appear to have been modeled in their position or moved to those positions. Check the distance between the edges of the horn and the planar surface using CrvDeviation and select the edges as the curves.

The absolute tolerance in this model is set to 0.001. Options > Units

Split and Trim will result in an edge which is within the absolute tolerance of the cutting object. When the cutting object is planar the the split/trimmed edge will usually be aligned with the plane of the cutting object to much closer than the absoltue tolerance.

Join requires the edges to be joined to be within twice the absolute tolerance. These edges a outside of twice the absolute tolerance.

Align can be used to align objects. For this model I would select either the horn or object with the planar surface as the object to align, use the Bottom option, select the horn or the planar object, and then select a location on the other object as the alignment point.

Troubleshooting mind and common sense

Somewhere along the way a mistake was made the human factor is in everything we touch, surely as we all know the software can act buggy sometimes but i think most often it’s human.

Trace back the steps from the start it always starts with a curve is there anything strange with it? Did I project it correctly? Is it straight? Automagic untrim? Nothing there? Move on to surfaces Etc…

Really is no way to teach this but experience, I mean sure the idea how to think can be a start but the solutions come with the hours and research put in

Forums is a great place to start here because you have people with varying levels of experience and solutions presented

Is my take on it.

In this instance i zoomed in and did the “selection highlight test©®™” (just invented btw )

If i see variations going back and forth with the mouse it tells me something is not right

you also have edge analysis that can help
