Iray was the best renderer for Rhino and it's not even close

For all the hassles of back-saving to V7, how it doesn’t really play nice with the Render SDK so assigning materials is broken, the flakiness with that it hasn’t been updated in years and isn’t compatible with most newer materials, it’s still faster and more responsive and no more quirky and unstable than Cycles, the tone mapping and exposure settings are miles more useful, the newer shader features that DO work are awesome and the basic ones are still a decade ahead of what’s exposed in the Rhino UI for Cycles. I might have to give Adobe even more money for Substance just for the chance to keep using it.

Not that I have a ton of experience with other products but I did just have to get Keyshot and wow I’m sure it seemed like the business when it was new….

I am afraid I can’t say much for Render SDK; but I beleive bella render is largely compatible with Grasshopper, and always worth a shot. It also has some good control over exposure and tonemapping.

I also sometimes find Cycles to have some very strange “isms” that often make the sheer GPU speed too much of an exchange. I use both, but generally I will always go to bella nowadays. I have found the recent Cycles bumpmap issue to be rather bothersome.
