InsertEdge is not working if I try to apply it to the non-primary side of a subd. This is probably same problem as the one linked below, but thought i’d report it too.
Many times I’ve carefully selected the edges then carefully selected the placement of my insert edge, clicked and then realized I was on the wrong side. Multiplied by whatever number of tools have the same issue and it really adds up.
I’ll look into seeing if it’s possible and reasonable to make InsertEdge preserve symmetry when the edge is inserted in any location that makes sense with respect to the current symmetry. Basically the edge needs to be contained in a single motif or connect vertices in adjacent motifs in a way that the result can propagate to the motifs not involved in the modification.
I don’t really understand the details of what you’re saying, but I’m thinking that if it only works sometimes, then that would be pretty upsetting to users. If it can’t work all the time, maybe it’s better to make it so that the InsertEdge tool can’t select edges on the non-primary side at all?
I agree that doing what’s expected needs to happen often enough that any changes make a large majority of users more productive and less confused. I can’t be much more specific until I dig into the code, look at the root of the issues, and determine what we might actually be able to change. If there are any changes we’ll put them in a WIP, get some feedback, and determine if the changes are useful enough to become part of the commercial release.
