Insert, import with old layers

If i have a custom layer menu and i import or insert a 3dm into the current work-space, it also import the layers from the old template. . .

Is there a way to insert an older part into the current work-space without all the extra baggage i.e. excess layers. .

The only way I know of is to open the file you want to import, put everything on one layer, purge the rest, then re-save the file under a different name. Then import it into your other file, it will only bring in the layer the objects are on.
