Importing of Solidworks files

Hello I am an occassional user of Rhino. I am currently working on a project where the majority of the mechanical design is completed in Rhino, but my client is sending me the occassional file from Solidworks (STEP file) I can import it without too much issue. But it completely slows down my project. I don’t have the most powerful or sophisticated laptop (MS Surface) (and possibly need an upgrade) so even when I import a pretty basic SW Step file everything slows down… even to the point of crashing …

I have notice the hundreds of nested blocks the imports creates. I am not sure whether exploding them all, helps or hinders. Is there any simple tips anyone could provide me which might help? Either the way I import, or subsequently deal with the SW files. I usually do not require absolute detail of the SW file, but typically need an accurate outline / dimension etc. I do not consider myself an expert Rhino user so please offer any advice accordingly…

Hi Alex -

I can’t tell from that comment if you have tried it. I would explode the blocks and delete, or at least hide, all objects from that STEP file that you don’t need to work with.

Thank you for your assistance. I will try changing the Mesh settings. In answer to other question i have tried exploding all then making a new block and exporting that but that does not seem to help.

No Surface meets the minimum specs to run Rhino. When I use mine, it’s to stream my desktop via Parsec.
