Is it really that bad? You can just disable it and uninstall most AI things. Also you can turn off most telemetry.. and get Windows Enterprise LTSC license instead of Home or Pro.
This is pretty useful to tweak the settings.
To state the obvious: the wild thing to say is that hating on Microsoft is in any way, shape or form close to inventing the wheel.

I am not happy with ANY of the choices that Microsoft has made with Windows 11. Do I hate Microsoft? No, but we have gone from: Our computer, our data–to not your computer–and now–not your data/IP. For that I am furious. Regardless of where it landed, I paid my money for Microsoft Windows, and they have some responsibility to their customers–even in this climate of corporate lawlessness. Microsoft has developed software to take a continual stream of a screenshots; the way I see it is there is no legitimate use for that. It’s no different than a keystroke logger.
Whilst, I am not against computer technology ( I live in Silicon Valley, have volunteered for the Computer History Museum, and spend a lot of time working on the 8,000 lines of code for something I might not ever release, and some things I have) , I do think that there are good applications for technology, and there are bad ones. As someone who first used a computer in the early 1980s, I see AI as being detrimental to humanity, displacing workers, consuming resources, forcing web-providers to defend themselves from scraping, stealing the works of others, and polluting humanity’s brain-share with nonsense. As deployed, I hate AI.
Computers used to perform tasks that people could not reasonably accomplish. With AI, the only thing they solve–is making money for their billionaire owners.
Here in the SF Bay area, looks like we are losing 1,000 jobs a week. It’s my belief that AI will never come up with a medical breakthrough–that will offset the loss of human medical insurance and livelyhood. I noticed something: it now takes longer to attempt to lock down Microsoft Windows–than it does to completely install Linux Mint (Cinnamon), with a standard office suite to boot. It shouldn’t be like that. I am actually for Privacy By Default legislation.
Even after my attempts, Microsoft still thinks that users can’t notice Windows updating in the background–when you are trying to render something. Linux is faster now, and it’s not up all night trying to index everything, so SSD wear is likely less on Linux.
Am I a Linux enthusiast? Oddly, no. Honestly, I have no love for Windows, Linux, or Mac, because I think that the OS’s are just too big, intrusive, and bulky. I think we could live in the age, where the entire OS can fit where the UEFI bloated firmware is now, and cold boot, not the pretend Microsoft boot, in just a few seconds.

If it’s work i had no problems doing customer orders during my practice just hooked up into their networks/ printers and just shared models they where running windows 11.
As people have already pointed out, there are means to disable most if not all of what you call “spyware”. I am not even going into the discussion about Microsoft‘s business practices. There are valid concerns of course and I would certainly prefer a less aggressive push for the use of MS’s cloud and AI services and some shady data mining in particular.
But what you are implying with your smug, patronising tone is something completely different: people just don’t understand, they are just too stupid if they decide that using Windows OS nevertheless may be the best solution for THEIR usecase.

Methinks some of yesterdays “gurus” are getting alarmed watching their little kingdoms slowly melt into the cauldron of “information available for the asking”.
It’s the same old saga, “I’m not protesting because I have to go to work” - it’s funny, but it’s ignorant - we all go to work - if you don’t get it, that’s no reason to make it my problem.
Because of the problems with Windows, the workflow, lately has been difficult. I only show Windows a few files at a time. This has both complicated things for me, but also reduced my Rhino time. Proverbially, I am cutting bait more–and fishing less. I just took in three mid-life computers, 8-cores, even a Mini-ITX. I did a clean install on it, and I thought I had most of it under control, but since my last machine install, now new Windows 11 installations, appear to upload user files to OneDrive by default. Not good. Fortunately, it was only the dedicated medial computer in the living room, but still, that’s a recent installation change, and one that’s not apparent in the settings.
Perhaps I should have stated the obvious: I love Rhino 3D, and wish to continue using it. I still believe that Rhino 3D has the best user interface of any 3D program ever made. I also think that drawing things in Rhino, means for me, that things can be designed with generational changes, because the user spends less time with their face buried in a hierarchical menu and constraining things that will likely be changed.
I also have told dozens of people that the forum here is one of the best forums I have been on. Overall, I have found the people and corporate culture here friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic. This forum is hosted and moderated by a company. Most of us are guests here. I believe that this forum alone is a feature of McNeel’s product Rhino3D.

Win 11 System settings:
Change any cloud entries to a local drive. -
Office 365 apps, e.g. Word, Options|Save settings:
Untick Autosave files stored in the Cloud by default.
Tick Save to computer by default.
Enter a valid local drive folder as the default location.
Repeat for other 365 apps (some have different routes to the save settings). -
Rhino settings:
Nothing to do here.
I think the best short term solution is probably fixing wine and proton with patches, and potentially making workarounds in rhino itself if needed.
Many modern games run perfectly on modern Linux under wine / proton, and if you look in the wine thread, seems like progress is being made.
I think its quite good that there doesnt seem to be some hostile DRM that makes it impossible, so i would hope that sooner rather than later it would be possible to run it perfectly well in linux, even if not completely natively.

I hear this all the time. A few years ago a friend that manages a shop and its workers was saying something similar about electric cars displacing mechanics, robots displacing workers etc. I told him “do you remember when we worked together on buying those CNC machines? Each one of them allowed you to fire 5 employees and at the same time do things that were impossible with hand tools. Today, 10 years later, your business is bigger and you have hired three times more people than you have fired, exactly because of those machines.” He thought about it a little, and his answer was “well… I just don’t like change”
AI is a tool, just like the CNC machines and the robots that will destroy all jobs, like the invention of the books that will cause humans to stop learning and remembering things, and all other innovative tools that found opposition when they came out.
And those who got fired had to wait 10 years to get hired again? Did they find other jobs directly?
What’s funny with that is that we are told we have to work until 70 to have a somewhat liveable pension, but no company is interested in hiring people where it starts to get difficult even as low as 40.
But yeay progression! and ai being abused by unnecessary greed producing mediocre garbage and limiting jobs just to earn more bucks because it’s so easy for every single human being to get a job just to get roof over their heads and food on the table…
And don’t get me started on “everyone can become anything if they put their minds to it”
because that is false.
The concerns are valid because by the end of the day no one has a single plan how to deal with this, while folks who are vocal laughing all the way to the bank scratching their heads wondering why is there so much division in wealth and pretend like they actually give a shit.

I can give you a long list of people that tried to do something using AI and failed miserably, only to ask me to do it. And I did it using AI.
It’s a tool, but it isn’t easy to use.
I just showed you one example of “I told you so”, where his answer was “I just don’t like change”.
I tell you a story in which CNC machines eliminated 10 jobs and created 30, and you choose to focus entirely on the 10 jobs that disappeared while disregarding the 30 that were created.
I didn’t say CNC machines make you richer (even if they do), I said they create jobs.
Same with books, AI and other tools.
If you are nostalgic for a time when books did not exist, people had better memories, and everyone supposedly learned things properly; when tractors and combines did not exist and half the world’s population worked in agriculture; or when CNC machines did not exist and manufacturing jobs were harder, more dangerous, and produced lower-quality work, knock yourself out.
I choose to live in the real world. That world now includes another powerful high-tech tool that many people love to hate.

im old and young enough to hear the stories from folks on the floor of machine shops that made these changes you speak of its not all rainbows and sunshines, 3-8 years of unemployment was not uncommon.

The books and CNC machines of the past didn’t actually steal from people; the people who offer AI does.

However, because Microsoft was trusted with our work documents and our love letters, it was wrong to just start uploading anything anywhere–especially now that it has AI aspirations. It’s like finding that your house-sitter moved all of your possessions to their house…for safekeeping.
