He doesn’t even use Rhino so this is very off topic but I love his art and, perhaps, others might like to have a look. Some of his pictures are very Chris Foss and reminds me of 70s SF book covers. For example: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/YBVo3w
Well, you could recreate one of his designs in Rhino. I looked through his gallery, and I really like this one. It looks like something Kyle could recreate using SubD.
@theoutside , it’s a shame we don’t have themed contests on this forum from time to time. I mentioned it in the meme thread, and you also suggested organizing themed contests. Something like this would have been really cool—a spaceship design challenge.
I think that the real difficulty in recreating that would be the painterly look, the fake airbrushing and the textures on the ship. Those are probably skills that most of us don’t have here, or aren’t showcased much as we do 3D solid modelling rather than “painting”.
But, I bet, there are some here who do other art. I suppose they might not post examples because they could be seen as off topic.
Yeah, and beyond just creating the 3D model itself, there are people here who really know how to use all the texturing, UV mapping, decals, materials, lighting, and rendering tools—areas I’ve never really explored in depth.
Imagine a spaceship-themed challenge where the final presentation also counts: proper UV wrapping, decals, textures, materials, lighting, and rendering. The results would be incredible.
It would also become a huge learning opportunity. People who are strong at modeling could learn presentation techniques from the rendering experts, while people like me, who are comfortable with the 3D modeling side but have gaps in rendering, could learn by seeing how others approach the entire workflow from start to finish.
It would be nice to see how people handle those sides to things.
I suppose for products, people want to see just the product. And there would be so much more effort to do things the way Graham does. But there might be a payoff for movie posters. Or book art or for stirring up interest in a new SF series.
We actually have movie set and ship designers posting here.
I’m not sure about competitions because the people here often model for a living and a competition would have a deadline that they’d have to meet. OTOH, if you are fast, and are good at hitting deadlines, then maybe it wouldn’t be a problem.
