I imported a file but unfortunately I can’t modify it. I can select it and move it but I can’t modify the surface or add other elements.

i am guessing that you have imported a block. try Explode or ExplodeBlock , otherwise posting a file will get you much quicker help either.

Are layers in the file locked?

Upload the file if possible.

Also updating to recent service release would be a good idea. Your Rhino version is from summer last year.
