How to autotrace the edges from a 3d scan into smoothed curves?

Does anyone know if this is possible as I’m currently manually drawing what I need?

I’d like to automatically capture all the edges of 3d scans like this example including the louvred details etc… from the bonnet like the pink curve drawn on and have them all as smoothed curves (or straight lines to corners if any on other scans)

I’ve tried with Contour, and various mesh tools, but I’m getting absolutely nowhere.

This is possible in a somewhat automated way in certain scan post processing software but not in Rhino.

As Martin suggest, you typically need a dedicated reverse engineering application. I know there are forum members that use Rhino exclusively for this, and get excellent results, but do not benefit from some of the time saving functionality in working with meshes that are offered in those applications.

On the high end Design X https://hexagon.com/products/geomagic-design-x, but it is nearly $15,000 UD dollars. It is the industy standard for reverse engineering, if you have the budget. There are 3 in in the $2000 - $3000 range, Mesh2Surface (Rhino plugin) mesh2surface.com, QuickSurface (standalone version of mesh2surface) quicksurface.com and Mesh2CAD cyborg3d.com

I should add that the push button conversion form a mesh to nurbs is typically useless to produce a quality result. It is occasionally useful for organic or sculptural forms. An application that can generate clean curves, and then build quality surfaces is required for mechanical components, product and vehicle surfaces.

There is a methodology to produce a quality result regardless of the application, even considering a dedicated reverse engineering application. There are many post on the forum about generating quality surfaces.

I think you could probably cut pieces from the basemesh and establish cplanes for silhouettes.
Haven’t used this much on meshes and I am sure it depends on the quality/density of triangulation.
