How it simplifies an object from SubD to Nurbs. It's possible? Does this make sense?

Is there a command in the Rhino 7 Wip that allows you to simplify (decrease the number of surfaces generated without changing the starting shape) a Nurbs object after it has been converted from SubD to Nurbs? (ToNurbs).
For example, a SubD object is converted to Nurbs (consisting of 60 surfaces). To make this object more manageable and less complex, is it possible to lower the number of surfaces, for example, from 60 to 20, while maintaining the shape?

I ask this because many times the conversion from SubD to Nurbs generates many single surfaces …

Thank you.

not yet, but I believe they are working on that.

Thanks

Resurrecting this… I’m trying to basically get a NURBS-defined lattice that approximates a TPMS/gyroid structure, and doing some unit tests of using shrinkwrap, quadremesh, and other workflow steps I can get there on a unit test as far as getting to a NURBS polysurface… but it’s very complex/heavy and I’d love a looser approximation that will scale better to the final full geometry.

Is this possible?

An order-of-magnitude simpler NURBS model is possible, particularly one with is a “looser approximation”. The simplest approach to obtain the simpler model may be to begin with a NURBS model. You could start a new thread showing an illustration or sketch of what you are trying to achieve, describe how it will be used, and ask for suggestions on how to create it.

One approach would be to start with a cube. Create constant section tubes which run through the cube. BooleanDifference to obtain a cube with holes. Then create blend surfaces to soften the sharp edges.

Hi David,

What I’m looking for (and feel like I’m on a road to achieving) is a generalized solution that works for both smooth and harder edged models. Here’s progress on a TPMS, from originally generated mesh on the left to a dense quad SubD mesh, a simplified SubD mesh, and then the Nurbs surface on the right.

I ended up being able to eventually get a reasonably good result moving between Rhino3D and Fusion360 for the final step of SubD to NURBs surfacing:

Now I’m working on further simplifying to make a lighter weight patterning to do a full lattice as needed for the application. Cheers!
