I applied a displacement map (unsuccessfully) to an hollow box, but I don’t know how to remove it. I can turn it off, but is that the only way to remove it? I am trying to create a wood grain (negative) displacement into a box and I only want the 4 sides, not the inside or bottom. I can CTRL+Shift and select the faces, but you can’t apply mapping to that, though I’m not sure that’s needed for displacement.
Thank you, Kyle! I never tried to delete the texture in the texture tab. But displacement doesn’t work for me I guess. I have so many issues with it. I just did Vectorize a black and white image of some wood grain, extruded it a little, then Boolean Difference into the surface. Works. ![]()
Happy to dig into your issues a bit if you’d like, or if you’ve moved on that’s fine too.
just let me know how I can be helpful.
That’s a pretty cool offer Kyle! I’m very sure I will need to use Displacement eventually.
Thank you, Kyle!

Ok Kyle, I can’t make my idea work. If you want to help, I certainly won’t say know. ![]()

I uploaded the main object I am working on. I assume a displacement map is the best option, but I want to create roughly 1/32" deep wood grain all around the OUTSIDE of the object. I also uploaded two images I was using for grain. No matter what I did, it either looked spotty or sometimes didn’t show a thing. I increased it to very high mesh, custom mesh, made sure it was a negative value, didn’t seem to matter. I intend to print this using an embedded wood fiber PLA on my printer. Without the woodgrain, it just looks tan.
Any learnings you want to teach me, I’m all ears. This is my retirement hobby not a business (one of many).
Thanks Kyle!

Grain Test.3dm (1.7 MB)
try this-
Grain Test_kfix.zip (6.9 MB)
make a pbr material, assign your grain in the displacement channel and use surface mapping for the mapping style.
Thank you!
