How Do I Give a Single Part Multiple Appearances?

How do I assign multiple appearances (colors) to the same part? So far, I am only able to assign just one appearance to a single part. Here’s more of what I’m looking for (from my other CAD program):

Hello - you can assign ‘per-face’ rendering materials by ctrl-shift (Sub-object) selecting faces in a polysurface to select them and then in the Materials tab, locate the material you’d like to apply, right click and choose ‘Assign to objects’

Thank you for the suggestion. However, it doesn’t work for me.
I am using Rhino V5, so maybe your suggestion is an updated feature in Rhino 6? Here’s what I get when I select just a face:

Basically, the properties tab devolves into a state that does not allow me to assign appearances to individual faces.

Hello - open the materials panel (sorry, not tab…) and assign from there.

It doesn’t work. When I assign a material to a selected facet via ctrl+shift, it assigns the material to the entire object:

I think subsurface material assignment is a new V6 enhancement.
