I can filter the unassigned materials so they dont appear in list but how do i select them so i can delete them? Thank you

Click on the 1st material, then hold the Shift key, then click on the last material and that will select all the materials that you filtered. Then press the Delete key. 
You can also try Purge command and select only Materials to be purged. It will delete all unused in the scene materials.

i understand but not so easy to just list all the unused materials only…
ok what is more confusing… is I have meterials that say they are being used but if I select items nothing is selected?? so Rhino thinks they are used but they are not!
Rhino has exactly that option to list the unused materials only. I find it convenient and easy to use.
