May I ask, why did you put the surface area as the negative? Arent negative values minimized?
I think surface area should be positive (maximized) and shadow hours negative (minimized) or am I missing something?
Octopus always minimizes. So if you put a positive value in, it will try to make it smaller. To get it bigger, you just put it in as negative. So while minimizing the negative number, you maximize the normal positive number.
