How can i fix my render quality?

No matter what I try or how many videos I watch, I can’t achieve the same level of render quality shown in the images.

I would really appreciate your help. Am I using incorrect settings?

First render is mine and second is from YouTube video.

Thank you in advance.

Hi @emre8
When you say render quality, what do you mean exactly? Are you referring to the noise in the picture, or are we talking about adding more “kapow” to the rendering? If it’s the noise, you just need to let rendering cook for longer and set the number of samples higher. If it’s about making the rendering look better/more professional, it’s a lot of small things:

  • Make sure you have an interesting view - make it dramatic/unusual and use suitable lens length.
  • Add fillets to even the smallest of edge (eg. using EdgeSoftening so you don’t have to manually add 0.05mm fillets to every edge).
  • Add focal blur/Depth of field.
  • Make sure to use a HDRi suitable for jewelry. Metals need something interesting to reflect in order to look interesting! You can also add physical lights (planes with emission material) for better shadows, more contrast and better control. I usually combine a HDRi with a few emission planes or area lights - it’s quick and easy.
  • Add a slight convex/concave to flat surfaces - it’ll make the more interesting to look at.

And there’s probably many more - this was just off the top of my head, and I’m by no means a jewelry expert. Hopefully someone proficient will chime in.

If you haven’t already, check out PJ Chen and Will Gibbon’s two videos on jewelry modeling and rendering in Rhino and Keyshot. Although the Will Gibbon’s video is targeted on Keyshot users, quite a lot if the advice he’s giving, can be used with any render engine, including Rhino’s.

Hi Jakob,

First of all, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. What I mean by render quality is, even in the simplest example, the reflection on the gold in the second render feels like it was photographed in a real studio environment, whereas the renders I get look very artificial.

I will watch the videos you shared and try again by applying your suggestions step by step.

Thanks again..!

Hi @emre8
Here’s a REALLY quick setup with a ring I just dl’ed for free from CGTrader - hopefully that can get you started on a setup in Rhino: A ring, 2 rectangular lights and a HDRi.

Regards, Jakob

This one I made a while back may help too…

Thank you very much. I will check it soon.

Thank you very much. I think someting wrong with my Rhino because yours look way much better than mine. I will try again. Thank you again
