Hidden active layer problem - maybe there's a better way of doing this

This comes up from time to time. It’s important information but it’s also a bit annoying to have to click it frequently.

Especially in this scenario:

Layer list is long and the sublayers hidden. Somewhere in this structure is the Active Layer that the user is trying to turn off. Now, how to find it ? Can take some time.

And the second question - which layer to choose as active? Maybe the need to turn off a layer with sublayers is just temporary (to see something behind or something similar). Then one needs to select a temporary active layer. Cumbersome.

One can draw with white colour on a white background and the geometry will not be seen (directly). There are other ways of creating geometry that is “invisible”.

Maybe turning of the active layer should not be disallowed? To me this makes more sense than to have a temporary “Layer parking place”.
