Help with Rhino Mold

Hello I am new to Rhino and I am having some trouble. I have a toy that I’ve created and I’ve decided to make a mold. I have generated the non-linear parting line with draft angle analysis, the ribbon offset, off set the curve with blend surface and created my mold surface face (Minus the place where the piece originally was: see photos).

My problem is I am trying to subtract my toy from the surface so I can now create my mold negative. when trying to Join the surfaces, “Can’t join surfaces”. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you are trying to work with a mesh and nurbs surfaces in the same model.

since you part is a mesh, you will need to have a mesh result.

you can use nurbs to make the mold parts, but you will need to mesh them in order to create your parts… Or you will need to make nurbs parts from your mesh with the quadremesh>to subd>to nurbs workflow.

an easy trick to get your mold halves is to simply use your parting line to split your part. then build from that part out to create your molds. once you have one side done, you can copy the surfaces so that your mates are clean.

you can start with a very detailed parting line, then lose detail as the shutoff travels away from the part. I have done quite a bit of this exact type of work and it’s actually pretty simple (yet a bit tedious) once you get all the steps sorted.

Thanks for the help Kyle, I really find your videos helpful. I when ahead and turned everything to a mesh and tried to connect everything, but I need up with a bunch of naked edges. Is there a way to fix this or should I just start over? Haha I feel like I am super close at times and then I always hit another wall. Thanks again

you are now in mesh repair hell…

kidding it’s not all that bad.

there are two key things you need to fix this.

the patch single face tool, which allows you to “bridge” from one element to another.

you do this and create “tabs” that result in holes that you can fill with the fillmeshhole command.

somthing like this
