Hatch inside another block turns black during BlockEdit

Hi,

I found a display issue in Rhino 8 when using BlockEdit.

I have two separate blocks, each containing regular geometry and a solid hatch. All object and hatch colors are set to By Layer.

When I edit Block B, the solid hatch inside Block A turns black. The other geometry inside Block A keeps its normal display.

The important part is that this only happens when the hatch is inside another block.
A hatch with the same layer/color that is not inside a block keeps its correct color during BlockEdit.

In the attached screenshot:

  • Block A: not being edited → hatch turns black
  • Block B: currently being edited → hatch stays red
  • No Block: hatch outside any block → stays red

The same behavior also occurs with BlockEditNew, so it seems to be related to Rhino’s display handling of hatches inside locked block instances rather than the plugin.

This issue is especially problematic in my workflow because I regularly use hatches as part of block definitions. During block editing, the hatches in other blocks no longer display with their actual layer colors, which makes visual coordination and checking between blocks difficult.

Is this a known Rhino 8 display bug, or is there a setting that controls this behavior?

@wim - McNeel team, please help here.

Hopefully, I’m just missing something. As you can see in the clip, this behavior makes working in 2D quite frustrating.

What I found out is that the hatches take on the color of the layer that the block is placed on.

Also If I enable Print Preview while BlockEdit is active, the hatch inside the other block is displayed with the correct color.

And Locked object usage is already set to Use object’s display attributes.

Hi Sven -

This doesn’t look to be limited to neither BlockEdit nor hatch objects. Objects in a block instance are drawn in the color of the instance when locked and the display mode is customized for locked objects.
→ RH-98666 Display: Color of Object in Locked Block

For what it’s worth, this works correctly for hatch objects in Rhino 9. I couldn’t find the YT that changed that behavior, so I’m not sure why hatch objects were special-cased.
