Gumball orientation

Hi all,
I’m trying to get my head around gumball and cplane orientations, and I’ve observed this behaviour:

The gumball setting that appears to “follow” the orientation of an object rotated using the gumball, is always that setting, which was used to do the rotation. It can be both “world” or “object” - if it was e.g. “object” then changing the gumball setting to “world” would set the gumball back to the world orientation, and vice versa. I have included screenshots in case it’s not clear what I mean. You can “produce” the same state of the gumball using two different settings.

I find this counterintuitive - I would have expected the “object” setting to be always following the object’s axes, and the “world” setting accordingly. Or is there something I am missing?
