GUMBALL improvement : actions areas

@Joshua_Kennedy I’m opening another Thread to keep better track on this request:

I found newby have difficult understanding of the different functions of the gumball especially when it comes to Move, Extrude, Cut.

Begginner get issue due the fact the link line of the gumball is actually active but not respecting the cut/extrude position.
This is already mentioned from @Rhino_Bulgaria into this post: Fix the gumball

@Vanessa , @Gijs and @theoutside What do youthink of making the line inactive and just make the 3 icons (arrow, small line, dot ) to be really active?

Thanks for considering it.

I like that :+1:

as mentioned in the linked thread, this already works the way you describe, unless I am missing something

I think that the Move arrow handle’s line could be active, as long as there is no other handle on it (Extrude ball handle, Cut line). However, as I mentioned in my topic linked above, once the Extrude ball handle located at the middle of the line is visible, half of the line between the ball and the origin of Gumball must not be active, because the user could activate move instead of extrude by accident.

the above image is Rhino 7, it doesn’t work like that in 8/9

Just tried it in Rhino 8 and it works like charm! Nice job.

On a side note, I experience a gigantic lag and performance loss when I drag a simple object while a display mode with shadow is active (like my “Bobi X14”). Exactly the same display mode works much smoother in Rhino 7.
The cursor tooltips are not an issue, because turning them off don’t fix the lag.

Thanks Gijs,

you’re right in V8 it’s already like this. I didn’t notice it.

Still my student get confused

Maybe I’m blind but it seems that this behaviour is not consistent or the distance threshold is a little off.

I think the line should be inactive and just the arrow triangle, cut bar and circle should be active.

In my case, moving the mouse from the circle or cut bar towards the arrow triangle activates the line already about the diameter of the circle away from the circle.

Same with the cut bar. My mouse is closer to the cut bar than to the arrow triangle but the line and arrow go black.

Maybe for clarity when pulling on the arrow just the triangle should go black?

Is this a real issue? As far as I can see the gumball activation areas for these tools work correctly, with the main focus on move. The areas are not centered around the tool. It is not the line that is ‘active’ anyway, it is based on proximity. @Joshua_Kennedy can tell exactly where those points are.
I don’t think we should fiddle with this (again)

Ok, all good…

Sorry to fiddle this again but I found begginner very confused on where and how to click. Maybe reducing the areas would give more attention to a specific tool.
If the 3 areas are exactly touching eachother click in the middle could lead to a mistake, while having them more clearly distinct reduces the confusion.
And the line should never become black other than if you pick the centrer point (3D movement)

That would mean you have to create dead areas. I don’t think that is a good idea. The extrude and cut tools slightly increase in size if you hover them. If users have trouble hitting these tools, they should increase the gumball size, or maybe slightly increase the extrude ball size and/or axis width could help see things better, eg: (this is with Extrude ball size 6 and Axis thickness 3)

Thanks Gijs to taking time answering.
I’m aware of the option you suggests but in my situation I don’t think is viable.
Big screen and Highres made the gumball very “sleek” but harder to read and yes making it bigger it improves.
I’ll take this suggestion and I’ll see next courses if work.
Ciao!
