We are looking for help to automate some parts of our current mold design process. Looking at using Grasshopper to build 3D printed investment casting shells using shrinkwrap off-sets.
We’d like to run a process similar to this:
Import part file (STEP format)
Generate shell (variable thickness)
Find and generate a split line
Create lugs on split face (user defined positions)
(Bonus feature: Convert internal features into cores)
Export as a STEP
If you believe you can build this for us we would be keen to talk.
could you provide an example—perhaps a STEP file or an image to start with—regarding the variable thickness aspect? I’m having trouble understanding it; does it refer to the thickness of the part itself? I’ve made many molds—some for casting, but mostly for composites—so what exactly do you mean by “lugs”?
Object is a small studio doing geometry automation - we take engineering know-how that sits in specialists’ heads and turn it into software: parametric pipelines in Rhino/Grasshopper, headless geometry services on Rhino.Compute and our own libraries, and the interfaces around them, usually ending at a machine. Around twenty projects so far across medical, additive manufacturing, shipbuilding, CNC and AEC. We also publish GH plugins - Anemone, Owl, Starling and more.
What you’re describing is that kind of pipeline, with the split line and the BRep-versus-mesh question at the export deciding most of the effort.
