software like solidworks has tools made for it looks like this on top rhino does not have it by default unless you have grasshopper and maybe some plugins

Of course there are good reasons.
They all have to do with the calculation I mentioned.
Autodesk’s licensing format entices lots of people to use their over-priced software. For one they can throw the network license all over the place and get away with it. And there is little enforcement against people using cracked software outside of certain countries. It effectively becomes predatory pricing. AutoCAD is the best basic drafting program out there but everything else they have there’s usually a better alternative (if they haven’t bought it out). Tekla is better than Revit (for structural). Workflows combining AutoCAD with a 3D program (other than Revit) can easily create better architectural drawings than Revit. Catia is better than Alias. Based on the math above (working that poor Jr. Designer to death without even bathroom breaks lol), the economics makes complete sense - Catia being wicked expensive of course. So is Tekla but Revit has become such a black hole of time and resources.
I find the cost of certain software isnt always realised in the initial design phase, but rather down the line when it comes to design modification and iteration. Yes you do the same design with Rhino vs Creo (for example) but once the design is done Creo offers so much more flexibility to make major changes with relative speed and ease. I can change the wall thickness on a complex plastic part without much headache whereas rhino would take a lot of manual work to get that done. That flexibility is what justifies a lot of the cost.

I think this has the potential to rival Lightroom - if it can pick up enough support. Huge mistake from Affinity/Canva to not include something like this into their eco system.
Affinity has ‘tone map’ function. You can start it by right-clicking the viewport. This function makes photographs sharper. (By the way, the quality of Affinity Photo dropped after Canva bought it.)
It’s great that there are plenty of CAD programs, so everyone could use whatever fits better to their needs.
Personally I use Rhino due to its:
- Free-form NURBS surfacing tools (especially the new Rhino 9 that should be unveiled soon);
- Full UI customization and 4 different ways to run the commands (regular icons, single keys, typing aliases, text menu);
- Each icon can include two commands for the left mouse button and right mouse button;
- Perfect support for 3d mouse;
- Robust layers management;
- Convenient drawing of lines, arcs and splines;
- Drafting tools and dimensions;
- Lots of analysis tools (say “Hello” to the new Static Zebra in Rhino 9);
- Selection tools for specific object types;
- Custom macros/scripts and plug-ins;
- Custom display modes;
- The
! _SetObjectDisplayModecommand; - Isolate objects (endless levels of isolation with a simple macro):
- Ability to use blocks (reference objects from other Rhino files) for massively smaller file size, faster saving and must mower usage of the RAM and CPU;
- Construction planes (CPlanes);
- Clipping planes;
- Object grouping;
- Selection filter;
- History-enabled commands;
- Support for both, DirectX and OpenGL;
- Much faster learning curve compared to any other CAD program;
- File notes (something like an integrated Notepad);
- Printing layouts;
- Plus many more. The list is endless.
@Gijs @menno This command is simply beautiful, “SetObjectDisplayMode”, but it falls into one of those commands that isn’t well explained in the documentation. A user with only a superficial knowledge of Rhino might never realize how incredibly useful this feature actually is. Adding a short explanatory video like this one would really help showcase its potential.
As a command line Rhino user I am worried by your video.
Is the dropdown option on the command line permanent or can I disable it? Cause I am usually looking for the option I want to type in the options looking for the underscored letter.
This is going to be quite a bit different in upcoming builds and yes you will still be able to type in the option.
Typing the option I believe it wouldn’t be messed up because of muscular memory, and I know McNeel have that always in mind when changing things.
My worry is about being able to see the option and which letter it uses, especially for those commands that I don’t use very often.
You will be able to see the option. The new design is not very different than what the command line has been in the past on Windows with some little niceties for things like clickable drop-downs.
Perhaps some key could be used to cycle through the dropdown menu’s list items, eliminating the need to navigate and click them with mouse?
Greetings gentlemen. I am looking for this mysterious software diplayed on the screen attached. Its viewport appearance is very familiar, like a clone of IcemSURF, but I have not seen a similar interface of tools on the right anywhere. Almost sure that there are genuine experienced gurus here who have encountered this Red Book creature. So who could it be and what is its name?

@Lagom Sorry for the late reply—I completely missed the notification for this message.
Yes, you can override the display mode for individual objects regardless of the viewport display mode. For example, if you’re in Ghosted view but want a specific object to be Shaded, you can do that. Likewise, if you’re in Wireframe view but want a particular object to be displayed in Rendered mode, that’s also possible.
