I see Rhino V9 wip now has GD&T dimensioning, I was wondering how many users use it in there workflow or even outside of rhino or if this is something left more to engineers?
I found this vid interesting and I like how the op uses rapid prototyping to quickly check parts and tolerances.
We use it in our workflow for aerospace clients… however it’s still really really difficult to have engineers sit down and understand how tolerances stack up. I personally feel that GD&T is amazing but the notation is weak… what would really really be cool if you could develop the tolerance stack in grasshopper and assign to model elements… then… have grasshopper visualize extreme conditions based on the notation to help engineer and “engineers” figure out what the assignments really should be that would be the holy grail of GD&T….
But at that point you need a solid modeler bc rhino would need to understand part the assembly concept… I understand Rhino as my Swiss Army knife… but sometimes I wish we could have a strict parametric function and modeling history beyond the very light changes made in v8 with history and dimensions protesting once in a while that they broke.
I was a big proponent of GD&T functionality being added to Rhino. It isn’t necessarily something I use a lot, but when it’s required, it’s required. I’m grateful for the fact that it is part of the Rhino 9 WIP
Separate but related, I am also of the opinion that education around GD&T worldwide is weak. Throughout my 4-year undergraduate engineering degree, it was never mentioned. I had never heard of it until my first job. When I wanted to understand more, the answer I kept hearing time and time again was “check out the website GD&T basics” - a good resource, but it strikes me as odd that there are seemingly very few alternatives out there.
Videos like the ones linked in the first post are a good place to start, but GD&T does remain something of a dark art to many (and I do include myself in this category, there is more that I struggle to understand than I clearly understand even having been exposed to it for years now)
I’m getting into the details trying to learn more about it for a few projects and appreciate the candid responses and for sharing your experiences it really helps seeing what others have to struggle with and where they feel the strengths are.
This should be pursued in the GDT thread for Rhino sounds like a good candidate for Gh wishes.
Glad I’m not alone that’s pretty much what many people say when you ask and I am studying what is on that site and the videos.
Wow of course you wrote you own impressive. Do you find that the new GDT tools in Rhino meet your requirements or is your version still better suited for your needs? If so what is Rhino’s version lacking?
From what I’ve seen so far the new GD&T tools in V9 look good, but this only covers the feature control frame. Unless I missed it, I don’t see a way to add “Datum Features”, suppress redundant zeros for basic dimensions or create a basic dimension box.
Hi Dan,
That’s good to know and doesn’t that make Rhino’s V9 version unusable for the most part?
This should be quoted on McNeels GD&T posting so they know what is missing.
