Flow along surface and smashing

I’m looking to create the effect of handle bar tape on some drop bars.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions in order to get the most accurate UV map so that the flow along surface command has as few issues as possible wrapping objects around the handlebars. Currently, there are quite a few gaps appearing, so the UV must be shrinking in places?

Hi Oli - you can try using a copy of your surface that has been rebuilt to a high point count (=even UV) as the target surface.
