A native section box would go a long way in R8. I’m playing around with clipping planes to achieve the same effect in R7 (doesn’t take that long but the results aren’t great). There are also (at least) two plugins on Food4Rhino.
It’s not something people use too often, but given you can almost achieve the same effect with 6 clipping planes it might not be that hard to implement?
Using the clipping planes, I get an okay result, but anywhere two clipping planes intersect results in no line being shown. It would be nice if this was changed via an update in R7 but I can live with it. I might also try something with VARQ (I’m only using native Rhino clipping planes for now):

Kind of… I was trying to create this with a boolean difference but ended up having to slice off a small chunk of the spheres or else it would just form a solid sphere (as long as there was a flat surface I could boolean difference them):
