Fast animation of flame and smoke

Jake O’Neal explains how he animated flame and smoke in Blender (12:11-22:00):

He did it by moving textures representing flame and smoke rather than by physical simulation because the simulation is very slow - it runs for weeks. Mobile textures look good enough and they render much faster. I believe that the same method can be used in Bongo because I have seen the same method used in Bongo 2 to animate ocean waves.
