I may try to buy it and see if I could avoid having a new PC. From my tests so far, all the free programs for mesh reduction failed to handle the STL file with almost 30 million triangles and only the demo of Balancer successfully read it and was capable to simplify it nicely at 10% off the original polygon count (with locked saving).
You are guilty, since I will not buy a new PC because of you!
Atangeo Balancer nPro does wonderful job in reducing the mesh, and even at 12% it still preserves nearly all of the original details. The converted model is approximately 3 million polygons now and runs very smoothly in my Rhino 7.
I combine this with @Holo’s advice to insert an instance of the 3d model to make the file size smaller. This hugely improves my workflow, because I no longer experience slowdowns after each transformation of the model in the 3d space.
I would like to thank everybody else for the help!
I was forced to look around for an alternative to Geomagic for decimation because my company would not renew the maintenance on it. Thankfully Balancer exists, and its very reasonably priced.
It is one of the best purchases in my life. A real game changer for everyone who deals with 3d scanned data.
