Probably a simple question, but not for me. How do I extend the surface such that I completely eliminate the highlighted opening?

You could use Untrim but that will untrim more than just that area. You can also join the curves that you have selected in that image and close it. Then create a planar surface from that closed curve. Join with the rest and merge all coplanar surfaces.

The command ReplaceEdge Mode=ReplaceWithLine (or Mode=ExtendSideEdges) should work for what you are showing.
