Exporting/saving to Rhino 5 #Rhino 7 BETA (7.0.20273.15003, 29-09-2020)

I often export my Geometry to Rhino 5, since this is what my business-partners/suppliers can open. When I export, it NEVER does comes up with prompt window the first time, where you can click/select Rhino 5 / Rhino 6-export. Even though the file is saved, the file/export fails to open in Rhino 5, which means it saves in Rhino 7 format. It’s ONLY after the second time when you perform the export, that the prompt window appears, and the export is correcrtly made. This is an old bug that exits in Rhino 6 also.

You can make a custom button using the -export command

You can set the command line options (including version number) then save that to a macro, alias, or button for future use.

Hi Nikolaj -

I’m not following here. You select an object and then run Export. How do you get to save a file if the Export dialog box doesn’t come up? When you run Export and hit Enter, the file is just saved right away? Using which file name? Any feedback on the command line?

Hi Wim,

Just tested again, and now it works like a charm – reversed Murphy’s

law I guess?!

Still, the dialogue-box ONLY appears after second time you perform

the export, and not after the first export, this one:

Most important to me is however that the export is performed correctly the first time,

so, issue apparently solved. Thanks!

Hej Nikolaj -

Thanks for posting an image of the dialog box.
This dialog box appears when you overwrite an existing file that is in a file format that that older than the version that you are using.

This means that you exported the file when you ran Export the first time and that you are overwriting it when you run it the second time.

When you pick the correct file format when you export it the first time, there is no need to force this dialog box to let you pick the correct version.

When you run Export, you will get this dialog box:

… and it is here that you pick the version that you want.

Hi Wim,

My ticket apparantly NOT solved:

Just did an export geometry as Rhino 5 file:

After trying to open with Rhino 5, this appears, because it’s not exported properly:

image002.jpg

After 2nd export where dialogue box appears (because file is overwritten?),

file is exported properly, and can be opened with Rhino 5, as intended.

Hope you can make export work after 1st export and not 2nd?!

Thanks & best – Nikolaj

Hej Nikolaj -
Trying that here with a simple object works fine.
Can you upload a model in Rhino 7 format that causes this behavior?
Thanks,

Hi Wim,

Sry to bother you, I tried a few times and it exports to R50 just fine.

Can’t tell you why it didn’t work yesterday?!

Leave it for now, and if the problem occurs again, I’ll let you know.

Wish you a GREAT day – Nikolaj

Hi Wim,

Finally found out it was the Autodesk T-splines plugin that makes my Rhino 5

fail. After disabling it, Rhino 5 opens my Rhino 7-export without any bugs!!

Thanks & best – Nikolaj

Hei Nikolaj -

Wow - that’s rather bizarre behavior for that plug-in.
Thanks for reporting your findings - this might be useful for others running into the same issue later.
