Export to blender

Hi @3dsynergy. Thanks for your reply. I was searching about and find about speckle. Haven’t tried it by now, but it looks interesting. It will be next export/import workflow that I will test. Tested the 3dm exporter addon for blender and it works surprisingly well, but have the Cons you pointed: not much controls on the export settings neither having a way to sync files. I will test the OBJ export workflow and see what fits best form me. Since I’m new to blender it should take a while, but any discoverys I return here.

I believe McNeel know the importance of blender in industry (now even more) and soon the addon will get better. Never used a software that I had this kind of close contact with development team like Rhino. I believe they have some reason for not implementing live sync yet. Let’s wait and believe in McNeel’s vision.

If you mesh in Rhino then keep just the mesh objects. It will be the same to import using import_3dm as with OBJ.

The current import_3dm also imports all annotation and line work, which OBJ can’t.

FWIW I have created a new release of import_3dm v0.0.16: https://www.rhino3d.com/download/rhino/8/import_3dm/

  • fix for exception when importing
  • extension format for Blender 4.2 and later
  • automatic remove doubles
  • automatic smoothing
  • object import filtering: choose what object types to import

Hi @nathanletwory

Yes good point and I forgot to add that is one of the nice options in your plugin. Thanks for your efforts and this is nice to have when one needs to keep structures like layers and other objects intact.

One thing you might think of adding is good meshing using quad remeshing and have an export box where all the mesh settings can be accessed. It’s kind of roundabout that one has to go into display settings and set that to custom then save the file then use your export plugin. One of the reasons I still use obj format is that I don’t need curves or annotation 99% of the time and why would I do all these extra steps and not get the meshing I want in the first place and also have to set my display meshing to custom and save the file. This protocol is too time and error prone for me.

I feel we could benefit more from a live link plugin. Both 3dcoat and Unreal have the live link why can’t rhino? Ideally I would just like to highlight an object invoke send to blender and an option box would pop up allowing custom meshes or render meshes, and then all the current options as well.

There is no exporting going on in my add-on. It is fully Blender-side, import only.

As said, the add-on runs in Blender, not Rhino.

Create your templates such that meshing settings are always as close as to what you want?

And what about materials? There is a good import of Rhino materials to Blender materials.

resources

When setting a custom mesh that is then the render mesh.

But sure, it would be nice.

Every time I see a new release I became happier. Thanks for your work/efforts!

I’m wondering if that’s possible with grasshopper. I’m a newbie there, so I really don’t know. Maybe it’s worth to check.

@nathanletwory I think if we have the Addon “official page” where we can know how it work’s and how to get better usage of it should be nice. Maybe a topic in this forum, with a tutorial, explanations (what can and can’t do..) and every updates. I still have doubts about using it in case of reimport, in a workflow where I model, import in blender, try something new on rhino, then reimport to blender, and it keeps materials, collections, etc.. Is it possible?

upvote

You can check my YouTube channel, here is an older video on v0.0.12

I can make a newer soon. But you should be able to reimport overwriting geometry in Blender.

Sorry for talking too much, but i was testing the addon and something came into my mind: what if we could drag and drop rhino files? It is possible to make this work on a later version?

thanks, i’ll follow up there

That would be nice. However I don’t see anything in the Blender API that would allow to register handling of file drops on Blender, so that is currently not possible.

If it helps, i found this plugin: https://superhivemarket.com/products/drag-n-drop-import

Currently i’m having a problem with the addon. The same i was having with rhino to twinmotion workflow:

The problem is for other programs to understand rhino objects with more than one texture assigned. When in this situation, the other programs undestand only one texture.

Heres what I have in Rhino:

Here’s what I got in Blender via 3dm importer addon:

And in the material preview and rendered viewports it seams like the surfaces lost their colours/texture. I can’t understand why:

And here’s the sample file:
BlenderAddonTexture.3dm (243.9 KB)

I quit Twinmotion and started to learn blender because of this problem but it’s on blender too
I believe that the problem is how rhino textures work’s since it’s the first time I’m having this textures issues.

Now I see that even rhino have this compatibility issue with itself:

I ExtractRenderMesh the model and bellow is what i got.

Oh man, this is becoming a nightmare..

EDIT: at D5 Render the sub-object textures works fine, so its possible (the problem is that my computer starts to scream :sob:). Here’s a look:

Multiple mappings and materials per object is not yet implemented, I hope to get that done when I have a bit more time

Not really, this is work not using Blender APIs but rather hack around that, and is prone to break. This particular addon works only until Blender 4.0.

Didn’t this problem already get solved?

Been looking for something like this for ages and here you just casually drop it. Finally a link between Rhino & blender!

Oh, this makes my hearth carefree. Thanks! That’s why rhino is the best. I have a moment of crysis but almost always can count on rhino team good work.

Thanks for clarify that for me.

Wow, thank you, will test it this night!

When you test it, please report your experience here. I’ll do the same.

Hi Nathan !

Thank you for Updating to v0.0.16 !
I was looking forward to it ! I just wonder if it is not yet updated to import Rhinoceris Lights into Blender?
Thank you so much.

Lights are not yet being imported, no.

OK. Thank you so much ! I hope it will be in someday.
and then Game will change for me !!
Do you have any idea to import Rhino lights into blender in another way?
